Usamos while para después escribir past continuous, mientras que usamos when para a continuación escribir past simple.

1.-ACCIÓN INTERRUMPIDA EN EL PASADO

Una acción en el tiempo interrumpida por una acción corta usualmente en past simple.

I was watching TV when she called.
When the phone rang, she was writing a letter.
While we were having the picnic, it started to rain.

2.-ACCIÓN INTERRUMPIDA EN UN TIMEPO DETERMINADO

Es igual que el punto número uno pero especificando el tiempo en el que sucede la acción que interrumpe.

Last night at 6 PM, I was eating dinner.
At midnight, we were still driving through the desert.
Yesterday at this time, I was sitting at my desk at work.

3.- ACCIONES PARALELAS EN EL PASADO

Para expresar ideas que estaban pasando a la vez en el pasado.

I was studying while he was making dinner.
While Ellen was reading, Tim was watching television.
Were you listening while he was talking?

4.- ACCIONES REPETIDAS EN EL PASADO

Se utiliza para acciones que han pasado de forma repetida en el pasado en momentos concretos. Muy parecido al uso de "used to"

She was always coming to class late.
He was constantly talking. He annoyed everyone.
I didn't like them because they were always complaining.

USOS
El pasado simple inglés se usa de 5 modos:

1... PARA ACCIONES TERMINADAS EN EL PASADO
Usamos el past simple para acciones que empezaron y acabaron en un espacio definido de tiempo pasado.

I saw a movie yesterday.
I didn't see a play yesterday.
Last year, I travel to Japan.

2... UNA SERIE DE ACCIONES COMPLETAS
Usamos el past simple para una serie de acciones que terminaron en el pasado.

I finished to work, walked to the beach, and found a nice place to swim.

3... DURACIÓN EN EL PASADO
Usamos el past simple para acciones que empezaron en el pasado que perduraron en el timepo pero que ya han acabado.

I lived in Cádiz for two years.
He studied Japanese for five years.

4... HÁBITOS EN EL PASADO
Usamos el past simple para acciones que hacíamos constantemente en el pasado. Se puede utilizar del mismo modo que ''used to''. Habitualmente va acompañado de always, often, usually, never, when I was a child, when I was younger, etc.

I studied French when I was child.
She usually worked after schooll.

5... HECHOS Y GENERALIZACIONES PASADAS
Usamos el past simple para cosas generales que ocurrieron en el pasado. También se puede utilizar como ''used to''.

He didn't like tomatoes before.
Did you live in Texas when you were a kid?
People paid much more to make cell phone calls in the past.
